mpc: 7 There had been little news on the euro area during the previous month, but what data there had been continued to be consistent with robust growth. Retail sales had been flat in the first quarter, although this was probably a temporary reaction to the VAT increase in Germany. The Purchasing Managers Indices for both manufacturing and services remained at relatively high levels, although the latter had declined slightly in April. The early estimate of euro-area CPI had suggested a fall in the inflation rate to 1.8% in April.
