Disentangling the various effects of these factors was far from straightforward, making the assessment of the outlook for consumption particularly uncertain. Overall, the cumulative slowdown in consumer spending since the middle of 2004 could be broadly accounted for by changes in its key determinants: post-tax income, household wealth and interest rates.
