mpc: 25 CPI inflation had fallen to 1.4% in July from 1.6% in June, as the contribution from higher petrol
prices had moderated and the `base effect' from falls in petrol prices in June 2003 had dropped away.
In line with the pre-release arrangements, an advance estimate of CPI inflation in August had been
provided to the Governor 3½ working days ahead of publication, and this had suggested a further fall
in the rate to 1.3%, which was in line with the Committee's expectations.
